The deadline to make your STAR Awards nomination is fast approaching, so if you know someone who deserves recognition for the outstanding work they do in the further education sector, then make sure you don’t miss your chance to reward them by getting your nomination to us by the 12 June deadline.

STAR Awards film on Excellence Gateway TV
A brilliant new STAR Awards film is now available to view on the LSIS Excellence Gateway. As 2008 marked the five year anniversary of the STAR Awards, the film looks at the importance of the awards to the teaching community, highlighting in particular the experience of 2008 support role winner, Evelyn Shaw from Ruskin College and 2008 innovation category winner, Geoff Rebbeck from Thanet College.

STARlight fund case study
The STARlight fund is available to STAR Award winners and highly commended nominees for personal and/or professional development. Although the fund is very much for the winner’s own development, most use the opportunity to access training or purchase equipment which also directly benefits learners.

Julie McLean, Head of work-based learning, from City College Plymouth was highly commended in the 2008 lifetime achievement category. Julie used her STARlight funding for a study trip to London for a small group of learners.

April prize draw winner

Each month, everybody who nominates a STAR not only gets the chance to have their unsung hero recognised, but is also automatically entered into a free monthly prize draw to win one of four technology-based prizes. April’s prize winner was Scott Ashdown, an automotive apprentice from City Training Service’s Automotive Academy in Bradford.

Spotlight on Skills for Life

The Skills for Life category is open to lecturers, tutors and other Skills for Life teaching or support staff, who excel in the teaching of literacy, language or numeracy, and inspire, motivate and encourage their learners to succeed. The STAR Awards 2008 Skills for Life winner, Lynn Evans, an ESOL coordinator at Stafford College, was nominated because of her belief that ESOL skills are key to the future happiness, prosperity and independence of learners.
